Urban Rehabilitation : Alternative Approach for the Low-rise Walk-ups in Sham Shui Po
Instead of redevelopment, there are lots of buildings that are waiting to be rehabilitated in Sham Shui Po. With proper building rehabilitations, it can prolong building life around 10 to 20 years, and also enable redevelopment to catch up the pace of urban decay.
However, the building rehabilitation by URA only intends to bring buildings back to current acceptable functional conditions. In the next 10 or 20 years, can we propose more than URA's building rehabilitation with additional temporary public space and facility, not only buildings can grow old healthily, citizens can also enjoy their living in the coming future.

Pok Fu Lam Aqueduct Concerto:
Experience the Water Infrastructure in Hong Kong
Water infrastructure in Hong Kong has been developed for more than 160 years. Citizens or even Antiquities and Monuments Office neglect the heritage value of Pok Fu Lam Aqueduct hidden in Pok Fu Lam country park.
This project aims to daylight the remaining aqueducts and redesign the trail, hoping that people can review the history during the journey, understand the development history of Hong Kong water supply system. Only by a thorough understanding of the efforts and challenges behind production and transportation of clean water can people appreciate the true value of water and take conscious steps to conserve it.

Integrated Intercultural Public Space, Kowloon Park
The thesis begins with a hypothesis that urban parks should be a social condenser rather exclusive. In response to the traditional planning of parks as just open green spaces, this thesis explores the strategy and tactics to engage diverse ethnic communities to be part of the park. The proposed strategic planning of park spaces and activities boosts interaction. It could be argued that parks must be integrated physically with the street and culturally with the users to create opportunities for diverse cultural groups to interact with each other.

Ecosystem of Recycle
Nowadays, our understanding of garbage disposal has always been ""disappear as soon as possible."" This idea led the government to deal with the crisis by using expand the scale of landfills and construction of new incineration facilities.
The thesis is a study of how to apply ecosystem theory for recycling facilities that can be more attractive and closer to the public within the district's distance. It provides a new prototype of the integrated building connecting the communal and recycling industry and provides an improving solution for municipal solid waste.
The aim is to introduce a community recycling facility to society and create an experience to transform people's habits, also promote the relationship between humans and waste, which everyone could not escape and ignore.

A New Lifestyle: Cross Harbour Greenway
In Hong Kong, the existing linkage between Kowloon and Hong Kong are the three cross-harbour tunnels. All of them are for vehicle use only, and this usage has exceeded their capacity for many years.
The design ideas are to create a footbridge across the harbour and to merge with the existing and future promenade. The footbridge is only built for bicycles and pedestrians.
This footbridge brings up new lifestyle of cycling around Victoria Harbour and let visitors enjoy the leisure and appreciate the best view of the harbour. As the first cross-harbour footbridge, the Greenway will become a new tourist spot of Hong Kong.

In-situ Rehousing: Rehousing of Kwai Shing West Estate
The overriding concerns of traditional redevelopment of public housing are always efficiency and quantity. The by-product of rapid redevelopment, including segregation of community neighborhood and singleton elders is often put in much lower priority. In contrast to the traditional redevelopment scheme that tends to disperse well-established neighborhoods, this proposed transitional housing attempts to forge stronger neighborhood relationships. By deploying architectural approaches over a timeline, the adaptive reuse of the Chun Shing Factory Estate as in-situ rehousing site for Kwai Shing West Estate residents not only responds to the emotional bonding between people and place, minimizes the social segregation during redevelopment, but also establish a more cohesive future.

No More One-off Aggressive Renewal:
Transitional Design for Metobolism of Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market
Why is Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market relocation proposal still stagnant without real progress for almost half a century? One of the reasons is that all parties expect a one-off aggressive approach to the redevelopment of such a large-scale and complex urban site.
The thesis regards this market as an organism with its future planned as a process of metabolism involving elimination, convertion as well as growth. Instead of simply designing the ultimate appearance of the site, the proposal outlines the transitional process of the declining fruit wholesaling business gradually replaced by the new localised socio-cultural programme. The flexible modular system and the elevated public platforms are proposed as the catalytic devices to kick off the urban renewal process.

A Study of Urban Block: Future Mongkok Rhapsody
The 100 feet x 40 feet x 18 feet height urban block was designed in the 1910's to provide quality environment for dwelling and urban needs. The inhabitants had occupied different voids for their living life. In 2010's, the block had been built up to 255 m height in the same urban Grid. This thesis proposes a super
block that enhances the built environment, sustaining the urban self-occupied lifestyle during the urban renewal. With the parametric studies, this Superblock was subtracted with urban ventilation and sun hours control to resolve the air speed, heat island effect, and finally form a semi-self-sustain block and revitalize the urban space to give improved public impact at different levels.

MTR is Hong Kong's major public transportation system. More stations will be built in the future. As an massive Infrastructure, the station acts as a transitional space only.
Tuen Mun MTR Station is a unique MTR station because it was constructed above a river. However, as with any other Hong Kong MTR station, there is a lot of unused space inside, above, and below the station. Furthermore, the river separates Tuen Mun, with only bridges connecting the riverside. The station should provide more as it is the only large-scale infrastructure above the river.

What the future holds for the harbourfront in Yau Tong is a matter now noted by many people. Some current proposals suggest that the area shall be reclaimed for residential purposes. There should be choices other than those so that the site could be 'preserved' for the locals and enjoyed by others. The idea of the design is to suggest the area preserve some of its originality for the younger generations instead of zoning the area for residential development only. The Yau Tong Bay harbourfront could become the place for those living and visiting the area to come together and communicate and offer the opportunities to embrace the history and culture of the site.

Urban Adhesive: Tectonic Street Design for Guided Gentrification
Thesis Proposal Abstract CHECKED BY: Mr. David BOOTH Dr. Edwin WU
Name of Student Lai Vince "The street is glue and solvent to embrace the local activities, the bottom-up neighborhoods, and the spontaneous surroundings. Regardless, these streets are facing threats from urban capitalism. This thesis explores a win-win strategy that street renewal projects can employ to strengthen the local culture.
This thesis proposes a renovated strategy to guide the capital and lead the gentrification for urban redevelopment. The proposal emphasizes the local hawker culture by offering new urban connections, porosities, and dimensions of experience to the economic fabric. The design is to renew the poetic construction, revitalize the freedom of self-modification, and create dynamism on the street.

Revealing Identity of Tuen Mun:
Redesigning a Community Hub in San Hui
Tuen Mun, being the first-generation satellite town in Hong Kong, has gone through a rapid transformation since the 1960s. From a fishing village to a well-developed urbanized new town, a lot of valuable history traces have been neglected and fade away in the process of development. New generations could hardly find traces of the past of Tuen Mun, resulting in diminishing the sense of place and belongings.
This thesis is to investigate how the intervention to Yan Oi Tong Complex and San Hui Market helps to encourage sociability and interaction between people, aiming to foster the neighborhood cohesion of the local community and recreate the community spirit of the place.

Exhibition in Architecture: A Moving Bus in the Museum
A museum is an institution that cares for a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. Those exhibits can be permanent, temporary or even mobile.
A Bus is not simply an object, it is a kind of space for humans to stay and experience in the city. It contains facades and spatial elements by acting as a transportation role to serve people for transitioning from place to place.
The Hong Kong bus is not only hugely relevant to our present, but to our past as well. This thesis explores the exhibition strategies in specific exhibits (buses).

A New Housing Typology Under a Subsidized Scheme: Accommodation of Optimal Spatial Mix
The ageing population becomes a critical issue in Hong Kong. The situation will be more critical in the coming 10 years. Unfortunately, there are inadequate transition supports to the senior groups.
According to the HK Smart Ageing Survey 2021, seniors prefer aging in place rather than living in elderly home. However, senior housing in HK currently makes it hard for seniors to establish a good relationship with the neighbor and the community.
A new housing typology for seniors is intended to be explored in this thesis. The objective is to help the seniors in establishing a close neighborhood relationship and be active in the community, live happily, live actively, and live fruitfully through this new design.

RIPPLE \ breakdancing: The energy transference in between
#Ripples #Energy transference #Interaction
Breakdancing is not about showing off skills, but more about the interaction in-between audience and dancer. I believe there is some sort of two-way energy wave, instead of receiving energy from the dancer in one-way direction, just like the formation of ripple.
